How do I create a variance column from two filtered columns?

Hello,

In the attached image, we have two filtered columns, "Actual - 2019" and "Forecast April - 2019", I want to add a "Variance" column, which is the difference between the two columns. How do I reference the columns to build the formula to perform the subtraction?

Thank you.

  • Hi Kevin, the Incorta table that stores your actuals and the Incorta table that stores your forecast should have a common parent table.  When doing variance, this table is almost always a Calendar table (time based).  That way, you can group by Month on the parent table and show the actuals next to the forecast and also create a formula field for the difference between actuals and forecast.  Does this make sense?

  • Hello Dan,

I am unsure if I understand. I should have added to my post that the original data source is Hyperion Financial Management (HFM), so our tables are based on ESSBASE dimensions.

    Thank you, Kevin

    • Kevin Jacklin Hi Kevin,  perhaps a working session would work best so you we could speak specifically to your schema setup.  If you still have the POC environment available at Civeo that we used when the product was being evaluated, I distinctly remember a dashboard we built to show actual vs forecast variance.  The actuals were coming from JDE and the forecast from Essbase.  The grouping date came from a common "Date" table (common parent both to Essbase forecast and JDE transactions).

    • Dan Brock Hello Brock, a working session would likely be faster. Today has been really busy. If you are available tomorrow, August 1, between 7:30 to noon Mountain Time, please connect with me.
